Harini, Introduce about you, your shift to USA and how you started the journey towards baking to our Readers.
I am from India but have lived in the middle east during my early childhood days. I came to the US as a student and it had its own challenges. Every day was a learning and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have always been passionate about baking and spent endless hours creating and testing out recipes.
Initially I was fascinated by how a few ingredients could make something so spongy and delicious. One thing lead to another and I found myself spending hours and trying out new flavors, designs, etc.
As much as it is stressful, it is also a stress buster for me. If am not working at my day job or with my kids, you will find me in my world “Kitchen – baking or cooking”.
Tell us more about your Journey towards cake making
A cake is all about flavor and I love combining French pastry techniques with Indian flavor profiles to create unique decadence. The very first cake I baked was in 2008. It tasted great but of course wasn’t a pretty one.
I have come a long way baking and decorating for over a decade now. I have several trainings and certifications under my belt and continue to learn everyday in this vast industry.
I initially started the business as “Sweet Confessions” and later added my name to the business thus making it “Sweet Confessions by Harini”
How your family and friends support your work
My family and friends have always been by my side since I started experimenting, be it reassuring me on my low days, comforting me or taste testing all the batches of
experimental baked goods.
They always believed I will take this forward and stood by me when I needed them the most as the journey hasn’t been very easy.
As an IT professional and mom of 2 little kids, my day is very demanding but this world of sugar, flour and butter just gives me the satisfaction of what I truly love.
Apart from baking and cooking, I love to sing and crochet.
I am the artist, baker, shopper, designer, delivery person, etc. Basically, a one woman show!
How you took Baking as a business
Started baking as a hobby which became a side hustle as I started
getting orders even before I had planned to open a business. But with no background in how to operate a business I have had several challenges with making this a reality and it has been a huge learning curve for me.
I operate under Texas Cottage Law. I still have so much more to learn and there will never be a stop to learning, be it baking or business management.
In what way you are working with your clients and the value you give to them ,
I bake with my heart and soul. Every order however big or small means everything to me and I strive to outdo myself each day.
Bringing happiness means everything and when I can do it extra special with something edible, it makes my day and all the long hours and late nights have a meaning.
Seeing a little child or an adult jump with excitement just makes it so worth and I know I can do this from my heart all my life.
Did you got any special training in Cake making
I have done several certificate courses and workshops from cake artists and chefs around the world. I also have a diploma from PME school of cake decorating.
I have been fortunate to have taken classes from Cake Artist Rhu Strand, Cake Artist Barbara Lurasci, Pastry Chef Karthika, Chef Nicolas Lodge and many more.
How will go with prizing for custom cake
Every client will have a memory of designing their custom cake rather than just ordering a cake.
I spend hours consulting and explain in depth all the options, flavors and design
cause end of the day my client has to get the cake of their dream and my job is to get that to them.
Since these are custom cakes and are very specific to details, pricing is varied based on design complexity, number of servings and flavor combinations. There is no one price fits all since every cake is a unique art piece designed for the special day.
