Research “a million word gap”

Researchers at Ohio State University found that , young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids whose parents didn’t read to them .

Kids who hear more vocabulary words are going to be better prepared to see those word in print when they enter school.

They are more likely to pick up reading skills more quickly and easily, said Jessica Logan , lead author of the study.

To test the word count , the team calculated the average number of word per age- appropriate book, then calculated how many words that would come out to kids having heard – at different reading levels, by their fifth birthday. The result is striking.

Kids who were ‘never’ read heard 4,662 words by kindergarten kids who were read a book a day came to school with 296,660 words and kids who heard five books a day came with 1,483,300 words. You see the difference —it’s that big difference.

It’s what researchers are now calling “a million word gap” in literacy .

Why Book Reading is Important:

Mamma you might think , we are just talking a lot to our kids?

Isn’t that the same as reading aloud to kids? The vocabulary word gap in this study is different from the conversational word gap. This isn’t about everyday communication . The words kids hear in books are going to be much more complex, difficult words than they hear just taking to their parents and others in home , Logan said.

You might me first time mom or mom of 2 or more kids, it’s not late to start reading books to your kids.Start right away , all you need is the your kid favourite book .

Truly , reading is not under the activity of homework or studying .

Reading books which your kid interested, it will become habit of learning .
