Kootu is always my favourite list for lunch menu. It is easy to prepare and protein rich with added goodness of cabbage.This cabbage kootu goes well with plain steamed rice topped with ghee or side dish for chapathi ,dosa and idli. One of the best recipe to make during your monthly time .

Mother Friendly Recipe

Best for young mothers with small kids, you can try this recipe with your little kids . Easy to make and protein rich recipe.

Since the time and number of vessel are less. It is best for both mother and kids . Kids will eat the cabbage easily.

Cabbage Kootu Recipe

Equipment

  • Pressure cooker, pan ,mixer jar

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Moong Dal
  • 1 1/2 cup Cabbage
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

For Coconut Paste

  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • 11/2 tsp cumin seeds/jeera seeds
  • 2 no. green chilli
  • 2 tsp rice flour

For the Seasoning

  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3/4 tsp urad dal
  • 2 no dried red chilli
  • a pinch Hing/Asafoetida
  • 1 tblsp coriander leaves(optional)
  • few curry leaves

Instructions

  • Wash dal , cabbage and chop the cabbage finely .
  • In pressure cooker ,add moong dal along with cabbage and turmeric powder . Pour 1/2 to 2 cups of water.
  • Pressure cook in medium flame for 1 whistle and allow the pressure to cool down. Moong dal must be softened and mushy .
  • In meantime, prepare the coconut paste, take all the ingredients in mixer jar and grind to smooth paste with added little water.
  • Once the pressure is released ,add the coconut paste and cook for another 5 to 7 minute.
  • If the moong dal and cabbage is thick add 2 to 3 tbsp of water . Dal might stick and burn if there is no enough water.

Tempering :

  • Add tablespoon of oil in a small kadai,add in mustard seeds ,once it splutter add in the curry leaves and dried red chillies stir well and swtich off the slame.
  • Pour the tempered ingredients to the cabbage kootu mixture.Garnish the kootu with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with cooked rice topped with spoon of ghee.
